9th and 9th is a hip and bustling neighborhood located on Salt Lake City's east side. To understand how the area got its name, one must understand Salt Lake City's street naming scheme, which isn't always easy for newcomers. However, it makes sense, once you get it. Streets are called 100, 200, etc... as they move away from downtown, starting with the southeast corner of Temple Square. So as you go from 800 East to 900 East you went one block east away from downtown. If you go from 800 South to 900 South, you just went one block south from downtown.

This brings us back to 9th and 9th, which radiates out from 900 East and 900 South. So it's nine blocks south and nine blocks east of downtown Salt Lake City. But locals down always refer to the streets by 900, etc... They'll say first for 100 or second for 200. So the intersection of 900 East and 900 South would actually be 9th East and 9th South, or 9th and 9th.

But the area is more than just its name. It's an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and businesses that are serving young residents and families that have been moving into the area in recent years. Most of the businesses are along 9th South, which runs east and west about a block in each direction of 9th East, and if you set your GPS for that intersection you will find the area. Other Main Street communities in Utah include include Park City, the city of Ogden and Gardner Village in West Jordan.

Most of the shops, restaurants, and other businesses are located along 900 South. The heart of the area is at the intersection of 900 East and 900 South. Salt Lake City's street naming scheme can be intimidating to newcomers. Instead of saying 900, locals will say "9th" so instead of 900 East, they may say "9th East." This is how the area got its name.
