Founded in 1734, Shepherdstown is the oldest city in West Virginia. It's a fact that wouldn't surprise anyone walking along the town's historic streets. But it's also what's new that makes the town what it is today.

Most shops and restaurants in Shepherdstown can be found along German Street.

One sign of the town's past can be found in the historic buildings and brick-lined sidewalks. The area's clay soil was excellent for making bricks, which led to the founding of numerous brickyards in the area. Many of Shepherdstown's buildings were built with these locally produced bricks.

Today, much of the Shepherdstown's economy revolves around Shepherdstown University and can be seen in its funky shops and cafes. The small town also has a cosmopolitan feel to it. More commuters and retirees are moving to the area from the Washington, DC area, giving Shepherdstown another layer of sophistication.

When visiting Shepherdstown, you'll find a variety of unique stores that range from the funky to the quaint. Its college town atmosphere along with its rich supply of early nineteenth century architecture give the town a distinct appeal.

The heart of the town's action can be found along several blocks of German Street, which is Shepherdstown's Main Street. But the real show may be found along the way. Snug in the Appalachians along the Potomac Valley, the trip to Shepherdstown alone will provide you with numerous memorable vistas.
