Manayunk (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania
Manayunk is one of the most successful destinations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The community is known for its shopping, dining, and scenic views along the Schuylkill River. Manayunk was once its own borough before the city of Philadelphia swallowed up all of Philadelphia County in 1854. In fact, the main route through Manayunk is named Main Street, a holdover from its days as an independent borough, making it the only Main Street in the city of Philadelphia.
In the past, much of the town's success was based on the Manayunk Canal. Built along the Schuylkill River, the canal provided transportation for the anthracite coal being shipped to ports in Philadelphia. Eventually, the railroad replaced the canal as the primary form of transportation through the valley. Even the canal's towpath was covered with tracks.
Today both the canal and the railroad play an important part in Manayunk. A path along the canal is used heavily by hikers and bikers. And the Schuylkill River itself offers excellent vistas for many of the restaurants in Manayunk. But another impressive view is the site of the huge railroad arch that crosses over Main Street, completely dominating the skyline. Another railroad links Manayunk with Center City via Septa's R6 Norristown commuter rail line.
Manayunk has slowly gentrified over the years and has become one of the chic places to be in Philly. Upscale restaurants and stores have replaced many of the service oriented businesses that lined Main Street over the years. In 1983, the community was named a National Historic District. But things weren't always rosy. Tension grew between the businesses and the nearby residents. Parking was a hassle. There was even a moratorium on restaurant growth, seriously threatening Manayunk's hip scene.
The Manayunk Development Corporation proposed a solution. They pushed the Manayunk Design District initiative. Stores that sold furniture, furnishings, and other home accessories were heavily promoted. Similar stores soon moved in. Today, Manayunk boasts the highest concentration of furniture stores on one street on the east coast.
But no matter what you're looking for, you can probably find it in Manayunk. The majority of the shopping can be found along Main Street. Although there are some upscale chains, you'll also find a variety of unique stores including gift shops and art galleries, many featuring multi-cultural themes.
But Manayunk isn't just about the shopping. As one of Philly's hottest locations, Manayunk also has an active nightlife, including numerous restaurants many with live music. But if you like things a little more quiet, come during the day and take a stroll along the
Manayunk Canal. It's what started it all.
The town is one of Philadelphia's hottest locations and therefore the stores tend to be open seven days a week. Many even keep late hours especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
Manayunk has plenty of parking lots, but you'll have to pay—and some of the lots can be a tight fit.
