The longest stretch of Interstate 95 in the country runs through the state of Florida. As anyone who's driven it can tell you, the stretch through the Treasure Coast can sometimes be a lonely one. But there's one Destination Main Street in the heart of the Treasure Coast that's well worth a stop off the Interstate and that's Stuart, Florida.

Stuart is the seat of Martin County, which along with St. Lucie, Indian River, and northern Palm Beach Counties make up the Treasure Coast. The area gets its name from the artifacts recovered in the sixties from a Spanish treasure fleet that wrecked in a hurricane in 1715.

Population in Stuart first began to grow with the opening of Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway in the late Nineteenth Century. To serve this fast growing population, Martin County was formed from parts of St. Lucie County to the north and parts of Palm Beach County to the south. Stuart was established as the county seat.

The town thrived as the county seat for many years. However, development of strip shopping centers, particularly along U.S. 1 hurt the businesses in downtown Stuart, and the area fell into decline. Eventually, the town became part of the Florida Main Street Program. This program provides technical assistance to cities that are revitalizing their historic retail districts.

Today, downtown Stuart is a successful Main Street, with shops, restaurants, and other businesses. It was designated the Florida Main Street of the Month for July 2010. It's a popular tourist destination especially for snowbirds, a nickname for seasonal residents, and other folks visiting from up north. The growth of nearby South Florida has also provided a steady stream of visitors to Stuart who enjoy its quieter feel compared to the more bustling Main Streets found down the coast.

Stuart's Main Street is Southwest Osceola Street but other businesses can be found on Flagler and South Colorado Avenue and Southwest Flagler Avenue. A unique characteristic of Stuart is the narrow block between Southwest Osceola Street and Southwest Flagler Avenue. Many businesses have front entrances on Southwest Osceola Street but rear entrances on Southwest Flagler Avenue. Another oddity in Stuart is it's outdoor cafes. Due to the narrow sidewalks, restaurants have fenced off parts of the on-street diagonal parking to use for outdoor dining.

The nearby beach and the city's many intertwining waterways provide many recreational opportunities for visitors. In fact the city is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World. But when it's time for to relax, or just shop and eat, downtown Stuart is the place to visit.
