Tucked away between busy Interstate 95 and the Atlantic Ocean is downtown Delray Beach, which bills itself the Village by the Sea. But beyond that Delray Beach seems to be a hidden gem in South Florida with many folks not realizing such a wide array of shops and restaurants exist just a short hop off the freeway at the Atlantic Avenue exit.

Located between Palm Beach and West Palm Beach to the north and Boca Raton to the south, Delray Beach is in an affluent area and therefore features many high end restaurants and retailers. However, some moderately priced businesses also thrive in the area. Delray Beach has been able to hold its own as a successful destination in South Florida.

But it wasn't always like this. The history of Delray Beach is one of many ups and downs. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Delray Beach's economy was primarily driven by agriculture. One of the primary crops in the area were pineapples, and Delray Beach began its growth trajectory when numerous pineapple and tomato canning plants opened in the city. But drainage in the Everglades and competition from Cuba eventually hurt the agricultural industry in Delray Beach. Soon the 1920s land boom in Florida took off and construction, real estate speculation, and tourism helped develop Delray Beach into what was at the time the largest city between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

After World War II, the city continued to grow. As recently as the last ten years, numerous mixed-use projects complete with boutiques and cafes have risen out of the ground. Some of these projects can be found in an arts district established along NE Second Avenue just north of downtown. The area was named Pineapple Grove after Delray Beach's famous crop. Unfortunately, some of this construction slowed during the past recession. But Delray Beach continues to have a successful downtown with many visitors and few vacancies.

Downtown Delray Beach is located primarily on Atlantic Avenue, between Swinton Avenue and the drawbridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. Some businesses can be found on the side streets off Atlantic Avenue. Although a bit quieter, Pineapple Grove extends just north of Atlantic Avenue along NE Second Avenue. Be careful, another landmark of historic Delray Beach are the railroad tracks running through the heart of downtown across Atlantic Avenue. A part of Delray Beach's past, the Florida East Coast Railway line is currently used for hauling freight. But if plans to bring passenger traffic back to the line come to fruition, the tracks could also be a part of Delray Beach's future.

Retail Hours

Although a few stores close on Sundays and Mondays during the off season, most are open seven days a week. Also some stores stay open late on Fridays and Saturdays to take advantage of the later restaurant hours.

Parking

Delray Beach has plenty of free parking in lots and garages around downtown. A fee is charged at the garages during certain times and special events. On street parking is also available for free. However, adding meters to these spots has been a point of recent controversy.

Restrooms

No public restrooms are available. Be prepared to buy a snack or coffee at a cafe and ask to use their restroom.

Attractions

As the name implies, Delray Beach's biggest attraction is the beach, which is an approximately 20 minute walk east from the center of town. You'll walk across the drawbridge that spans the Intracoastal Waterway to get there.

Savor Our City Culinary Tours (800-979-3370) offers three hour historical walking food tours through downtown Delray Beach.

Just to the west of downtown Delray Beach is the Delray Beach International Tennis Center (30 NW First Avenue, 561-330-6000) where the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships are held each year.

The Old School Square Cultural Arts Center & National Historic Site (51 North Swinton Avenue, 561-243-7922) is home to the Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture and the Crest Theater. It is also the home numerous events and festivals.

Pineapple Grove is the fast growing arts district just to the north of Atlantic Avenue.

Events

Annual festivals include the Delray Beach Garlic Fest. Also a Delray Beach Wine & Seafood Fest takes place at the east end of Atlantic Avenue to feature the businesses on that side of town.

Location

Delray Beach is located in South Florida in Palm Beach County. The city is approximately 20 miles south of West Palm Beach and about 30 miles north of Fort Lauderdale and 50 miles north of Miami.

Take the Atlantic Avenue exit off of I-95 and keep heading east to reach downtown Delray Beach (but don't confuse this exit with Atlantic Boulevard further south). The downtown runs along Atlantic Avenue primarily between Swinton Avenue to the west and the Intracoastal Waterway to the east. The Pineapple Grove district runs north along NE Second Avenue for several blocks starting at its intersection with Atlantic Avenue.

The Downtown Roundabout is a free shuttle service that connects downtown Delray Beach to a Tri Rail Commuter Station to the west and the beach to the east.
